Skylar Yu

Skylar Yu’s contemporary dance journey began with FadaDance when she was 3 years old. Her years as a Fada student moved her to become a teaching assistant and give back to the community that helped spark her passion for the arts. Currently, she is a FadaDance instructor, as well as a senior dancer with the Youth Company!

Skylar danced with the FadaDance Youth Company in Arrivals/Departures (2022), and Rivulets (2023), an expansion on the Holloway trails ensemble work. Most recently in 2023-2024, she had the amazing opportunity to travel to Toronto. She took to heart the wisdom of the traditional Kathak dance form, shared by the renowned Joanna De Souza, and had the chance to present this new-found admiration of Kathak in Unravel & Thread (2024).

Having also worked with GRR! Rock Camp since 2022 as a mentor and a graduated camper, Skylar knows the importance of empowering youth to assert themselves through art. When she sees young dancers and musicians come into themselves, Skylar is proud to be providing them with the same experiences that she has valued growing up in this wonderful community.

As a strong believer in the power that art and music has to support activism, Skylar has been an active member of the Campbell Collegiate Queer-Straight Alliance, painting crosswalks and planning Queer school dances. Outside of school, she joined the Art For Change team in 2024 as an organizer and performer. Her first-hand experience with the issues affecting youth in Saskatchewan has led her to go out and uplift the voices of others, as well as make her own noise through music, art, and movement.

The combination of creating visual art, playing music, and her expression through movement continues to help Skylar navigate the world and to keep giving back the same love this community has shown her throughout the years.

After graduating highschool in 2024, Skylar is ready to further amplify her skills as a FadaDance instructor this upcoming 2024-2025 dance season!
